Baby Birds: An Artist Looks into the Nest with Julie Zickefoose
July 19 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Wednesday, July 19 6pm-7:30pm, $15.00/participant.
If you’ve ever wondered what goes on in bird nests, or what happens after a fledgling leaves the nest, join us for an evening with Julie Zickefoose to hear about her book “Baby Birds: An Artist Looks into the Nest” a daily diary of baby bird growth. Artist and wildlife rehabilitator, Zickefoose, documented the daily changes in 17 bird species from hatching to fledging nesting in her private bird sanctuary in the Appalachian foothills of Ohio, including Carolina wrens, eastern bluebirds, tree swallows, house sparrows, mourning doves, and yellow-billed cuckoos. Baby Birds is the enchanting result of her studies, with more than 500 life studies that hop, crawl and flutter through its pages accompanied by more than 400 highly detailed watercolor paintings showing the development of the birds. This book serves as a resource for bird watchers and aficionados, and as a memoir of a person who finds joy in the beauty and wonder of nature. In this talk at DPNC, Julie will share her influences as well as her artistic process, a must-see for the aspiring natural history artist. The work, wonder and fun of studying nestlings, including being foster mother to orphaned hummingbirds, chimney swifts and bluebirds, makes for an irresistible and highly inspirational presentation.
