Classic Nature Camp

Remember when summer seemed to last forever?  The world always seemed to slow down as the temperature went up.  As children, we were able to throw our schedules to the wind and our attention to the clouds, green grass and butterflies.  Our classic Nature Camp brings those moments back for a new generation.  It provides a well-rounded experience for campers of every age.  We explore the many miles of trails available to us, including Coogan Farm, for most camps.  Children have the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of ecosystems and habitats such as ponds, streams, meadows and forests, in addition to area beaches and marshes for camps that go on field trips.  Every camper will get a close up look at the Nature Center Exhibits including the very popular Night in the Meadow theater.  Animal encounters are a favorite as we introduce our resident frogs, turtles, snakes, rabbits and birds of prey throughout the week.  At nature camp, children make friends and practice social skills through fun games, test their physical motor skills by climbing on our favorite rocks and boulders and express themselves creatively through various art projects and activities. Nature camp brings children back to basics and nurtures connections to the natural world.

Bird Brains

What does the world look like through the eyes of a bird?  Did you know that a hummingbird’s brain makes up 4.2 percent of its weight? Proportionally, that’s the largest of any bird’s. Studies have shown that hummingbirds can remember every flower they’ve ever visited, including on migration routes. Did you know the American kestrel can see the glowing ultraviolet light reflected from rodent urine? Do you think ravens are as intelligent as chimpanzees and dolphins?

Campers will ponder these curious questions and amazing bird facts as we hunt for birds through binoculars, try to capture the quintessential bird photograph, and listen for bird calls, songs, and alarms. Explore bird habitats and the incredible adaptations birds have to thrive and survive.  Help us attract more birds by building a nest box or feeder for Nature Center grounds.
