Tuesday. Celebrate the spring equinox at Gungywamp, and visit the fascinating, ancient stone features on the landscape, including the calendar chamber.  If the sun is shining on the equinox day, we’ll have the exciting experience of seeing the light shine directly into the calendar chamber. In addition, the hike explores rocky ridges, glacial erratics and swamps and evidence of beaver activity, along with the many mysterious stone structures. Walk with us through the woods and absorb the centuries of mystery of Gungywamp.

The Gungywamp complex is an archaeological site of distinct natural and cultural interest, stewarded by the Nature Center and in 2023 was confirmed to the Connecticut State Register of Historic Places and named a State Archaeological Preserve. Private Gungywamp tours may be booked by contacting [email protected].

A Gungywamp hike is for adults and families who are comfortable walking two miles of moderate difficulty over uneven terrain. Meets in the parking area at the former Shepherd of the Sea Chapel, 231 Gungywamp Road, Groton. Space is limited, advanced sign up is required.
