The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s Native Butterfly and Moth House was opened for the season on Friday July 27, with the release of dozens of butterflies and moths.
Many of our day campers and some visiting children released the butterflies and moths. Two of our educators, Amy Stich and Suzanne Burns, worked hard over the last couple of weeks preparing the house for its new tenants, clearing the overgrowth and planting new plants to support the butterflies, moths and larvae.
First opened in 2010, the Native Butterfly House is open during Nature Center regular hours, which are 9 a.m., to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m., to 4 p.m., Sunday. It is included in the admission price, $8 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.
We released: Mourning Cloak, Great-spangled Fritillary, Monarch, Baltimore, Comma, Questionmark, Cecropia Moth, Io Moth, Black, Giant, Pipevine, Tiger and Spicebush swallowtails.
In addition to supplying flowers and nectar feeders, we will also have buckets with larval food sources to supplement what is already growing in the house.
