The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is offering two new hiking programs, one for active seniors who want to explore the region’s trails, and one for folks who simply want to get out regularly and take a good walk.

The Active Seniors Walking Club will spend the first Saturday of each month exploring the woodlands and meadows of the region on a local trail. The 90-minute walks start at 2 p.m., and are scheduled through April in locations around southeastern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island. The first hike is Jan. 3 at Avery Preserve (Avalonia Land Conservancy), Ledyard. Cost is $4.25 member / $5 non-member. Call the Nature Center at 860-536-1216 or go online for more information and to register, www.dpnc.org/calendar

The other new series, Easy-Does-It Walkers, is a leisurely walk through the woods along with interpretive natural history through the seasons with a knowledgeable DPNC guide. It meets the first Sunday of every month. The 90-minute walks start at 2 p.m., and also take place across the region. The first walk is Jan. 4, at Knox Family Farm Preserve (Avalonia Land Conservancy), Stonington. Cost is $4.25 member / $5 non-member. Call the Nature Center at 860-536-1216 or go online for more information and to register, www.dpnc.org/calendar

In addition to the two new hiking series, the Nature Center is also offering two perennial favorites, its twice-a-month Pequotsepos Hikers, and its monthly Full Moon Walks. The schedule of Pequotsepos Hikers – which is free for members and $10 for nonmembers – can be found online at www.dpnc.org/hikers/. The next one is Jan. 6 at Merritt Family Forest (Groton Open Space Association), Groton.

The schedule for Full Moon Walks is available at dpnc.org/calendar (search for Full Moon). The next scheduled walk is Jan. 5, at 5 p.m. at Thomas Miner Preserve (Stonington Land Trust), Stonington. These walks are free to all.
